Big Jim’s Drive In Menu

Gotta love this place! I made the decision to skip chain restaurants on my last trip to see family in Spokane and stopped in here for a late Friday lunch. They have an extensive menu. I stuck with the Big Jim burger, small fries and a blackberry shake. It was all very good. One thing of note was the fact that I could taste the tomato on the burger. I can't remember the last time I had a burger where the tomato wasn't some rock hard tasteless puck stuck in for color only. The only drawback was that it was a bit on the pricey side. My burger, fry and shake meal topped $10. A little steep, in my opinion, especially for such a rural location. That takes a star off. Overall a great place to stop in when booking down I-84 through the gorge. I will be back in next time I'm through here.

Food was not great, even for a drive in. Should have stuck to the milkshakes and skipped the rest. They prominently display a photo of their fish and chips, but the real thing holds no resemblance, the fries have some kind of batter to help them brown but which disguises the potato flavor, and the chili tastes like burned ketchup.

Big Jim's is one of the great family run drive-ins of the Columbia Basin. A little hard to find off the interchange of I-84 and Hwy 97 but well known in The Dalles. The burgers are hot fried so they're caramellized brown. Lots of choices of toppings and combinations. Great fries. It's a family run atmosphere and feels very much a part of the community. Skip McDonald's if you're passing through and try Big Jim's instead/

Best experience in the gorge! Great customer service, very friendly and helpful employees great you like family. Quick turnaround and hearty portions. I had the Jim Dandy Combo and so did Dolly. We scarfed it down with perfect onion rings. This place is special and I now crave more!!! Next time I'm having a milkshake.

Fantastic Swiss mushroom burger and salmon fish and chips. Great atmosphere and employees. Definitely happy

Basic burger joint, but it is the milk shakes that get me to exit the hwy! Parking isn't easy for RVs, though.

Possibly the best burgers I've had, but you need to request pickles. Honestly I can't think of another complaint. Good shakes, fair prices for the quality, excellent burgers, decent fries et al, great menu, quick service. If it were closer to where I live, I might eat myself to death here.

Overall good food. A little pricey if you get two sandwiches and two sides and water you can feed two for just under 20 dollars. I recommend the cheeseburger and the sweet fries.

Here right now! Izzak put fingers inside coke cup prior to giving to us. Another young male delivered someone else's order saying,"here you go"! I took back saying here you go wrong order. He asked " didnt you have #29? We had number 26 not 29. So the meat was typical pre formed 5oz and 2oz patty. You have to request onions and or pickles as they wont ask. Burgers has chopped lettuce a salad slice tomato and sauce. Reminded me of McD quarter pound burger. Watered down soda. Pricey, for what they serve. Better to go into the Dalles down the road. It's not an In-n-Out or a Pub burger. It's a tourist trap area. Locals like it as they don't have much to choose from and prolly never left their town. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

If you're driving on I84 from Portland going East, and the slightest bit hungry after an hours worht of driving (probably from being stuck in the friday traffic in PDX), please stop by at Big Jim's for some great, comforting american fast food and awesomely amazing ice cream shakes (with fresh fruit too!). Its location is great, and hardly needs a detour from the highway. I got the grilled salmon burger which was good, and they gave us free fries too (the fries were really good btw). But the star of the show was the shake with four fresh berries added. It was creamy, tasty and refreshing, and lasted me another 2 hours on our long drive to the Wallowas!

Great tasting burgers. Fries are yummy. I love their many flavored of ice cream. They have outside seating. They are a little spendy. The inside eating area is a little small.

Forget the the fast-food chains nearby. This place is better in every aspect. A wonderfully expansive menu like the chains have, but much higher quality. Tasty food, clean restaurant, and super-friendly service. Great ice cream options. You can't see it from i-84, but it is super easy to get to...just an exit and a couple of turns. We will be back when in The Dalles.

Well I'm changing my response. If you read what I had written before you had noticed I was dissatisfied with an orderand after bringing it up to employees i was made to pay extra to have it made correctly. Well I have since been contacted by management who wants to improve upon customer service. I appreciate that in a company. Thank you again for finding it important to look online to see how your customers feel about your company and the desire to wanting a company with great customer service.

Came here on a road trip with my girlfriend. Ordered their bacon cheeseburger and she had a mini cheeseburger and a strawberry shake. She's asked for no sauce bur received it anyway, meaning I was basically done with my meal by the time she received hers. Place was fairly clean but still felt gross to me for some reason. Probably all the other tweaker looking customers. Still, this place is preferable to a chain place for quality. My burger was good, just overpriced at 5 dollars.

We had a long day ahead of us, and the Dalles was going to be smack in the middle of our wanting lunch timeframe. So I got on Yelp (love mobile apps!), and found this gem of a fast food joint. For fast food, the food was superb. The burgers were fresh - and brought out quickly. They have tater tots (mmm.... tater tots), and these were made just perfectly. They were crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside, and oh so good. The staff was friendly, attentive, and fast as well, which was an extra bonus. My one bone to pick would be that if I bought the tater tots (or onion rings or curly fries) separately, they're only 50¢ more than the basic fries. However, if you get them in a combo instead of the fries, it adds an extra $1 to the cost. That seems more of a rip off than it should be.

  • Mary S.

The food was okay. Thin burger unless you want to pay $8 or $11 for a combo. Owner served us and he wasn't overly friendly. Proud of his $75K dressing that tasted like $3 thousand island. He wasn't genuinely nice and he was too friendly talking to him about my shellfish allergy. He gave me the tone that is was my problem and didn't ensure me that there wouldn't be any cross contamination. Probably wouldn't go back.

Wanted a good burger for lunch and stumbled upon Big Jim's. Checked out the reviews and decided to give it a try. I had a mini-BMS (bacon, mushroom, Swiss) and curly fries and was shocked how big the MINI was! And it was all delicious. I would have preferred a bit less salt on the fries, but they had a tasty combination of seasoning otherwise. We ate on the patio and our very pleasant server even offered water for our Yorkie. My only regret was not enough room left for ICE CREAM! Will definitely plan accordingly the next time we drop by, which I surely hope is in the not too distant future!

Great food a little high on prices and there ice cream is high to but it is good me and wife have sit there a few time and service is good and the food is always good if you don't mind paying more

Really great old fashioned burgers an grey sauce! On another tip I saw someone mentioned that it was mustardy, way off chick it's a 1000 Island a lil mayo heavy and it's delish! Fries and sides were fresh and hot and crunchy! But the good kind of crunchy folks. It was very busy but was still very fast! The crew is young and hard working with no dilly dallying around, which you see so often! And last but not least my banana malt wow! Very well made no straw blockages ( tends to happen with fresh banana ) and thick! A+ Jim's thank you!

  • Cheryl H.

Wonderful, creamy fresh peach milkshake! So many burgers to chose from, but the Jim Dandy won out, and it did not disappoint. Great curly fries. Others had the salmon burger and fish and chips, and said they were so yummy. A great place to eat.

The server wad knowledgeable and polite. He gave good ice cream suggestions. The ice cream was local and tasty. We'll come here again.

For the price you expect more than a frozen patty and soggy buns. 3 burgers, no fries or drinks $19.95. Not what it's cracked up to be.

We stopped here en route to Washington, relegating ourselves to eating typical roadside drive-in fare. Big Jim's way exceeded our expectations. Not fancy digs, but big, bright and clean. Big Jim's has a variety of food to suit just about anyone. You can be road trip down-n-dirty and get a burger and fries, or you can go "upscale" and get the wild salmon dinner. My husband got the salmon fish & chips both times (we had to stop on the way back too, of course), as well as a berry shake (can you go to Oregon and not have a berry shake?), and I got the grilled wild salmon dinner one time, and the veggie burger the next. Note, the dinner is not the kind of salmon dinner that comes with a lemon-butter sauce, but it is a good piece of fish. We were pleased with all of our food items. What was especially awesome was how friendly the cashiers were. They remembered us from our first stop, and when we told them we were visiting from Los Angeles and enjoying the fresh air, they left us a little note (see photo). Big Jim's is not only a great place to stop for a road trip, it's a great place to eat period.

Every time we come through The Dalles, we stop for a burger!!! Big Jim's has been open for 46 years and remains one of the best places!! Friendly wait staff, clean eating area and bathrooms, delicious food!!!! My favorite is the luau burger!!!! Definitely worth the drive!!

After spending a few days deep in the woods away from modern conveniences like 4G and food prepared by someone else, my bar was set low. All I wanted was greasy food I didn't have to work for, and we chose a well-rated local joint instead of a more familiar name. Bad choice. My burger (the Jim Dandy) was dry and bland, and while the fries were just as crisp as I like, their flavor hinted too strongly at the frying oil being shared with fish. Even the ketchup was suspect - while proudly wearing the Heinz logo on each bottle, it seemed watered down (or maybe it wasn't Heinz?). Big Jim's is a generic fast food place with lower quality food and higher prices than you'd expect. Avoid it.

Very good burger!!!! Flavorful and charbroiled just like I like it! Definitely will be stoping my next time around! The TRex ain't for sissys!!!!

On our way to the coast and saw this on yelp. Decent place with a good burger. I think big Jim was frying the burgers.

It is a drive in so I don't expect gourmet cuisine but everything was very good. As a matter of fact I am not a tater tots fan and couldn't understand the raves in these reviews. My husband ordered them and now I understand... I would go back just for those tater tots. They are just the right blend of crispy and flavorful. I have never had tater tots like that before. I don't know what they do that's different but they have the right touch. The service was friendly, the place was clean, and even though we got a little lost trying to find it on a dark and stormy night we were glad we stopped.

    (4)
  • Alma M.

The burger was good the people are cordial. The people in the small loop of town are subpar. I would imagine people in this small area would want more service. I don't think we will be back because of the overall experience. Though the burger was good.

The fries alone are worth the drive to The Dalles from Portland, not to mention the mouthwatering shakes and burgers.

  • Dan S.

They have so many options for different meal choices, combinations, and sides! They are seemingly endless! Stopped here on a road trip and received some awesome recommendations from the person that took our order. Food was very good and milkshakes just as large and tasty!

  • Marisa D.

Yummy place for good old fashioned burgers and fries! Really good chocolate shakes too. My only complaint is that it did take a while to get our food, but it seemed like it was always busy so that's probably why - and I know they were working hard (drive thru orders plus everyone inside). Overall great experience for my first time here. Delicious and old fashioned!

This place is great! Good burgers and fresh fruit shakes. The Dallas is on my way when visiting family and this is an easy pit stop. It is close the the freeway and usually pretty quick.

Break time in our Thanksgiving run to the Valley. Neither of us wanted to get out of the car, we just wanted some good drive though. Yelp! led us to Big Jim's. It was very easy to find, just two turns off the interstate and you're right there. It was much larger than the local drive-up joint we were expecting. Almost looked like if Red Robin had a drive through, this would be it. I could see from the driveway that there was plenty of seating inside and a nice large parking lot. The line for the drive through was clearly marked and quite adequate for the string of cars that awaited their orders to be taken. This was fine by us, as it gave us the opportunity to browse the menu. We each looked everything over and were pleased with the many options presented to us. In the end, as expected, we ordered burgers and fries. And one large chocolate malt. This malt was not just large. It was humongous. I do believe we increased our risk for diabetes from that one malt by at least 30%. The orders were hot and well made. I wish the actual burger patties had been slightly larger, but they were very good. The fries were salty, but not overly so. We only waited about 5 minutes from the time we placed the order to the time we pulled out, so that wasn't bad at all. Nice little place, great for a quick and filling bite on the road.

Big Jim's! Just found out about this place on the way back from La Grande. What a great experience. The Burgers are large and the fries are even better. They offer a variety of Milk Shakes too. They get your food out quick and although they are more expensive than a burger king or McDonalds the quality is much better. Definitely worth a stop on your trip east or west on I-84.

The best hamburger I've had since I left North Carolina four weeks ago. The bun was really fresh and good. I had a mini burger and my husband had a larger one with a milk shake. He said his was really good too! Wish I could go back but we are just passing through!

First off, $7.20 for an 1/8 lb. burger with fries and a drink seems a little outrageous when a McDonalds is a half mile away with a value combo of similar size for $3. Yet, I was really intrigued by the 4+ decades in business so thought I'd give it a try. The burger patty is tiny...similar to the McD's cheeseburger, but it was far more flavorful....reminiscent of the Wendy's burger from yesteryear. The fries were also very good...seemed almost battered based on how how crispy they were. It was a good meal overall. For an extra $1, will upsize to the 1/3 lb. burger next time.

Burgers, dogs, fish n chips, salads, veggie burgers, chicken and turkey bugers. The seasoned curly fries and the regular fries are awesome! Everything is hot and made to order. 16 flavors of ice cream and stellar shakes. Worth the stop on I-84 east at exit 87.

I was about to settle for fast food when passing through The Dalles but I let my wife talk me into Big Jim's. Good move on my part. Big Jim's menu is mostly burgers but it does have alternatives such as chicken and hot dogs. Burgers are served in several sizes up to 1 pound and with a variety of toppings, like ham and chili. There's real ice cream for shakes and cones. I got a 1/4 pound cheeseburger with ham. It was pretty good. Not jaw-dropping good, but solidly good. The staff at the counter are very friendly. Food is cooked fresh and served reasonably quickly.

I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. This is a cute place, right off the freeway, not too hard to find. Price: I will say that the price is a little high if you get all the extras. It was $8.60 for a bacon cheeseburger meal, but went up to around $12 when I subbed tator tots for fries and a shake for a soda. Quality: Everything I ordered was really fresh and yummy. The tator tots are so good - crispy and not too greasy. The shakes are to die for - I had a peanut butter banana shake and was in heaven; nice chunks of fresh banana. The quality of the beef is good, my only complaint is the size of the patty; It's only a 1/4 pound and doesn't really hold up to the size of the bun and all the toppings. Service/Ambience: Service is great. The staff is friendly and efficient. You won't wait too long for your order and they have table service! It's a quaint place - a mix of travellers and locals. The restaurant was clean and the bathrooms were great. Better than McDonald's any day. Be sure to get a shake!

This place is a staple food in the Gorge. My dad started taking me here as a kid on our way to go fishing and I have been stopping through a couple of times a year ever since. I will say that the food is sometimes amazing and other times it is mediocre at best. I think it has to do with the fact that it is a diner being ran by highschool kids. Sometimes they just don't want to be there and you can pretty much tell right away. Regardless, I would always rather pay the extra couple bucks for a Jim Dandy burger and tots than a crappy bag of McDonals. Oh and get a milkshake while you're there. I prefer Blackberry.

It had been a long long day in the backwoods of Wasco County searching for suitable roads for a rally event. We forgot to get lunch and there were eight hungry people descending on The Dalles looking for hearty food. One guy said he knew a place and we followed him to this sort of out of the way place. Big Jim's Drive In, Burgers made with love since 1968. How can you beat that for a tag line? I was intrigued. In we walked to be greeted by very friendly employees who gave us time to peruse their very large menu of items. Burgers, chicken sandwiches, fish & chips, shrimp & chips and more... but the place is known for their burgers so I decided to stay safe and go with the Jim Dandy, which is basically a 1/4 lb bacon cheeseburger. You can add curly fries or tater tots but I went with the fries, my friend got the tots so I could snag one of his and check them out. There was no place to seat 8 people so we asked if we could drag some tables together to which the ladies behind the counter said was no problem. Very friendly here in the The Dalles these people are. As we waited with our little plastic number teepee's on our big table I noticed that the place was immaculately clean, the bathroom smelled clean and fresh. So far, so good. In not too long a time (it's not fair to judge because we were ravenous and every moment was an eternity) we all had food coming to the tables. We ran the gamut with our orders from grilled cheese to ham and cheese, chili-burgers and other burgers with different toppings. My burger was very good, not great, not drop your jaw and savor the moment but it was what I expected for a place like this. However, the fries, oh my goodness, the fries! Seasoned, crispy outside, not greasy and when paired with a good sized 25 cent cup of fry sauce, heavenly! Yes they charged extra for fry sauce but I was willing to overlook that. My friend's tater tots? Really good, extra crispy and creamy inside. Everyone had good things to say about the food and some had shakes as well which were reported as very good. Foresake the golden arches, blow off the King, do not run for the border and tell Jack to take a hike, if you are traveling through The Dalles this is the place you want to stop.

...WOW... the service was friendly and the food was delicious... prices were well below the quality of food... next time I'm through Big Jim's will be our number 1 stop.

Best Burgers west of the Mississippi River and tater tots too. One of our favorite stops going thru eastern Oregon. I also love root beer floats and the handmade shakes. Very clean and great customer service.

Great burgers! The price is similar to a restaurants, but that is mainly because your order is cooked as you order and not sitting under a heat lamp for an hour. Not to be confused with a fast food joint. I always get the gorge burger with onion rings, so good.

I used to work here when I was in school, way before the building was remodeled to add indoor seating. Anyway,.... Big Jim's has a big selection of tasty fast food items. I'm impressed because in addition to their "world famous" hamburgers made with love, they also offer chicken, salmon, and halibut sandwiches. Ooooh what a wonderful selection for us non-beef eaters. I usually get the salmon burger and tater tots. They have little fry sauces to dip in too that are pretty good. A mix of mayo and ketchup, I think. They have a nice selection of hard, hand-dipped ice creams as well as soft serve. They've recently added some sugar free or no sugar added things to the menu as well. A funny anecdote: I went through the drive thru this summer with some friends. They ordered small soft serve cones that were so big, I was afraid the ice cream would topple over before they could get it eaten. It happened to be a 100-degree day too, so it was melting fast. I was having a laugh at their expense, when my "Kid's Cone" came through the window. It was maybe 3 bites smaller than their cones. OMG! Maybe next time I should try ordering a baby cone and see what happens. LOL

With so many "hooray for local business off the free way drive in" review, I was expecting a lot more. Theres always a hope that that road side dinner/burger joint is gonna just blow your mind out of no where..this was not the case..sigh. The burger was flavorless, cold in the middle and just generally blah. the shakes were good, the best part were the fries, skip the sauce. i have to keep trying to find something on my way to the rogue I guess. shrug.

Our family stopped here on the way home from a long drive because of the amount of stars this place had from yelp reviews. Two burgers with upgrades and one kids meal later, we were out 39 bucks and some change. The guy at the counter was very helpful telling us we could upgrade to onion rings and shakes for a certain price, and then offered to give us two flavors in one shake (fresh peach and fresh strawberry). He asked us what kind of sauces we wanted, to which we replied homemade ranch and fry sauce. Here's my beef: after being shocked by the total, I looked at the receipt. We were charged extra for upgrading to shakes, then charged extra for making the shakes fresh fruit, then double that for the two flavors. On top of that he gave us 4 sauces and charged us for each of those. The food was bland and nothing special, including the "fresh" shakes. The only upside is that they do give you good sized portions of the onion rings and fries.

I try to stop in at Big Jims whenever I'm in the Gorge... maybe once/twice per year. Big Jim's is one of the Gorge's staple food stops. Any local will tell you it's some of the best burgers and treats in The Dalles. They tout an awesome lineup of classic food and an amazing ice cream selection. What to go for: Check out the Jim Dandy burger. It's like a bacon cheeseburger with a twist. Also, order a milkshake made with hand scooped ice cream. You can't miss. Both the food and shakes are all made when ordered so the wait time is a bit longer, but it comes out fresh. I've noticed people on Yelp are a bit critical of the price, but being from a major metro area I feel like the price is in line with the quality and freshness. Keep up the good work, Big Jims! I'll continue to stop in whenever I visit Oregon :)

Even though we had other items before, I am awarding this place 4 stars just for the milkshakes. I love them. They are not full of sugar like others and there is fresh fruit, enough said. I drove 20 miles to get a blackberry one.
